My name is Portia and I’m a bookworm and publishing assistant working in London. I
recently graduated with a degree in English Literature (with Film), so as you can imagine I got through a lot of books whilst at university. It’s super exciting to be able to read whatever I want now that I’m done (though I do kinda miss academia). I also studied abroad in Sweden for a year which was the best experience ever, partly because I got to take an entire module on Harry Potter – dream come true.
I started reviewing books on my Tumblr in June 2018 after finishing my final year of university and needing an outlet for all my bookish thoughts. I made the switch to this, my own self-hosted site, in 2019, but I still post on Tumblr regularly too.
I read mainly contemporary literary fiction, crime novels, thrillers, and non-fiction, but I also like fantasy, magical realism, dystopia and poetry. I love to collect cookbooks too. Some of my favourite reads are A Tale for the Time Being; Salvage the Bones; The Book Thief; The Beach; Good Morning, Midnight; A Gentleman in Moscow; plus a bunch more that you can find on my Goodreads. I mainly read stand-alone novels, but my favourite series are Harry Potter, His Dark Materials, A Song of Ice and Fire, and The Passage trilogy. My most-read authors are Jesmyn Ward, Jean Rhys, and Neil Gaiman.
I can’t listen to music with lyrics when I read so I have a lot of instrumental soundtracks and ambient noise bookmarked for reading; you can find my favourites on my soundtrack page! This is also how I got the name for my blog – whilst listening to this.
Occasionally, I will review an Advanced Reader Copy of a book. These reviews will clearly state at the beginning of the post that I received an free ARC in exchange for an honest review. I will always review a book honestly; receiving a free copy of the book does not at all effect the way in which I would review it.
