Book Hauls

Christmas Book Haul

Every year my family asks me what I want for Christmas and every year my answer is: BOOKS! I share my wish list with them and always get a great selection under the tree on Christmas morning. Here are all my bookish presents from Christmas 2019.

By Order of the Peaky Blinders by Matthew W. Allen from my parents, plus a Peaky Blinders mug featuring Tommy and Arthur Shelby.

Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo from my parents. This is one I really wish I read last year but hopefully will get to it soon.

The Fire This Time edited by Jesmyn Ward from my parents; the only Jesmyn Ward book I didn’t have.

The Dutch House by Ann Patchett from my parents, but the special Waterstones edition with beautiful sprayed edges!

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J. K. Rowling, from my brother. I want to collect the special Slytherin editions in hardback and already had the Chamber of Secrets, so my brother bought me the remaining two that are already out AND pre-ordered the Goblet of Fire for me!

Life of the Party by Olivia Gatwood from a close friend. We actually exchanged birthday and Christmas presents earlier this year as she lives all the way in Brazil now. I bought her this poetry collection for her birthday and when she opened it, she slid my wrapped Christmas present across the table and heavily hinted that we’d bought each other the exact same thing. Soulmates or what?

A Life’s Music by Andreï Makine from my boss. I thought it was so kind of my boss to get me a present. I read this earlier in the week and thought it was beautifully written.

And finally, not a book but definitely bookish, my parents bought me a 1000-piece jigsaw puzzle that features the ‘High Jinks’ bookshelves at the Bodleian library. Later on I was having a rummage around my room at my parents’ and found a notebook my mum had bought me years ago with the same image on! We finished the jigsaw puzzle over Christmas a mere hour before I was due to head back to London – it took ages!

Did you get any bookish gifts over the holidays?

  1. I wish my friends and I organized a book exchange for the holidays, but I never think of it in time! I did do a book exchange with my book club, though, and I ended up with a copy of Siddhartha.

    1. It was less of a book exchange, more just swapping birthday/Christmas presents because we now only get to see each other once (maybe twice) a year. But we both always buy each other books as gifts, so I suppose it always ends up being book exchange! It’s a great idea to do with a book club though!

    1. It’s a great bunch of books, I was very pleased! I’ve already read an eARC of The Dutch House actually, my review is here – I just asked for the pretty hardback edition because a) it’s pretty, and b) I loved the story so much I needed a physical copy! I’m really looking forward to Ninth House though, and hopefully will get around to The Fire This Time soon too.

      1. Ah, I remember your review now, thanks for the link! Seems like I read it as my schedule was getting busy this fall, so I appreciated reading it again now that I have more time. I’m so glad you loved it, that’s the title I want to pick up as my first Patchett novel. I’m really drawn to the sibling relationship. And I completely agree, the hardback is STUNNING.
