If you’re a fan of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials series, you might know that there’s been a TV adaptation in the works for a little while now. I love this series. For me, it was just as formative in my childhood as the Harry Potter books. Ever since the adaptation was announced, I’ve been quickly devouring any news about it, especially casting. With TV giants HBO and BBC behind the series, it’s bound to be brilliant and this week we were given our first look at the star-studded cast in action in this short teaser trailer!
It looks fantastic! Lin-Manuel Miranda as Lee Scoresby is PERFECT, as is Ruth Wilson as Mrs. Coulter. I had reservations about James McAvoy as Lord Asriel but having seen him in costume and in character in the teaser trailer, I’m definitely warming to the idea. Dafne Keen isn’t how I picture Lyra (personally I always imagine Sophie Nélisse, who played Liesel in The Book Theif) but I thought she was incredible in Logan so I’m excited to see what she brings to the role. I was hoping they would give us a glimpse at Ruta Gedmintas as Serafina Pekkela as she’s one of my favourite characters of the series, but I don’t think she shows up until later episodes.
What we do know about the show is that there’s likely to be three series, each eight episodes long and covering one book of the original trilogy. Plus, it sounds like season two is already in the works. No release date yet, but a show like this is likely to premiere during the autumn so still some time to wait. Hopefully we’ll get a full length trailer soon that will reveal a little more about what we can expect!
If that wasn’t enough His Dark Materials news for you, today it was announced that volume two of The Book of Dust will be released October 3rd, 2019. Penguin’s announcement says that the new book will come “ahead of the highly-anticipated BBC One adaptation”, lending further credence to the idea that we won’t see the show on our screens until much later in the year.
Titled The Secret Commonwealth, the book takes place seven years after the end of His Dark Materials, as an adult Lyra searches for a town haunted by daemons. You can read an extract of the upcoming volume here!
I have to admit that La Belle Sauvage is one of the books I’m desperate to read but for some reason haven’t gotten around to yet. I have no excuse – I went to the release-day signing of the book so I’ve had it long enough! Though now I know that volume two is out in October, I might now save volume one for the summer so that I can read them back-to-back.
What do you guys think of the new book announcement? And are you excited for the TV adaptation?
