Magical Readathon: Winter Edition – Part I

For the third and final time this year, it’s Magical Readathon time! Once again, G at BookRoast has gone above and beyond with this readathon, this time creating a whole website for it! Here you can find all the info about all the past Magical Readathons, and get your prompts for this Winter edition.

As usual, you can also find a run down of how the Magical Readathon Winter edition works in G’s announcement video. Things are a little different this time around and I’m really excited to give it a try! Instead of completing subject-related prompts, and working towards a wizarding career (if you so choose), G has created a ‘choose your own adventure’ kind of system which generates prompts as you make your choices! You also don’t get all of your prompts at the beginning of the month; they’re staggered throughout December. I personally like to plan my whole TBR when doing readathons so I was a little unsure about this aspect of it to begin with, but it’ll be an interesting experiment for me!

The Magical Readathon: Winter story has five chapters which loosely follow the general narrative of The Chamber of Secrets – of course, this is the second year of the Magical Readathon so it’s been themed around the second book in the series. Each chapter opens on consecutive Sundays at 1pm Hogwarts time (GMT) for you to make your choices and get given anywhere between 1 and 3 prompts. You don’t have to finish all of your reading before the following chapter comes out, but you won’t have a full list of prompts until the very final Sunday, which falls on December 29th. So technically, the Magical Readathon: Winter edition runs until January 5th, but I’m personally just going to keep at it until I finish all the prompts I get!

It’s just gone 1pm here in the UK, so I’m going to get started on the first chapter. I suggest you stop reading here if you don’t want spoilers for the choices and prompts, etc. because below I’ll share what I end up with, as well as the books I’ve chosen to read for them! All the images are from the wonderful new Magical Readathon website.

Chapter 1 begins at the Dursleys, with you scrabbling to do some some studying before the new school year starts. Suddenly, a wild Dobby appears and begs you not to go back to Hogwarts (so far so familiar?). Your first choice is between lying about not going back just to get him to be quiet, or trying to calm him down but refusing not to return to Hogwarts. I was torn between following the actual story of The Chamber of Secrets or doing something a little different, but for this one I decided to lie, lie lie! This means the story I get next deviates entirely from that of the book. Instead, the summer passes without incident and just before school starts, you head to Diagon Alley to get supplies. My next choice was where to go first: Quality Quidditch Supplies or Flourish and Blotts. I chose the latter and got my first prompt!

My first prompt of the Magical Readathon: Winter edition is ‘grab your most recently acquired read’. I’m super chuffed with this one because I just bought Damien Le Bas’s The Stopping Places yesterday and I’m really keen to read it so this prompt is perfect!

After wandering around Flourish and Blotts you notice a commotion at the back of the store caused by the presence of Gilderoy Lockhart. You also notice Malfoy skulking about. Now you get three choices: ignore Lockhart and buy your books, queue up to get his autograph, or follow suspicious Malfoy. I decided to mind my own business, pay for my books and skedaddle. This leads me to the last part of the chapter, where the night ends at the Leaky Cauldron and school starts the next day.

And that’s it for chapter 1! I’ll check in next week to share what prompts I got for chapter 2 and what I plan to read.
