The second Sunday of December has been and gone so that means Chapter 2 of the Magical Readathon: Winter Edition is open! I finished my only read for Chapter 1 on Saturday and I’m ready for my next prompt! I didn’t get to go through the door for Chapter 2 until Monday evening as I went to visit magical Oxford where there was plenty of Harry Potter merchandise in almost every gift shop given that some scenes were filmed there.
Anyway, let’s crack on with Chapter 2!
First, I answered how I finished the previous chapter, and that was heading back to the Leaky Cauldron. Chapter 2 opens with an abrupt awakening from your room’s talking mirror, before heading to King’s Cross Station where you’re reunited with Hermione and Ron, who has clumsily knocked over all of first-year Ginny’s luggage. In characteristic Molly Weasley fashion, she insists she doesn’t need any help and ushers you towards the platform. The first choice is whether you help anyway and wait for Ron before heading through the barrier, or go on ahead with Hermione. I’m going to stick with my previous method of picking the opposite to what happens with the books, so I choose to go through the barrier and leave Ron behind. This gives me my first prompt: read an urban fantasy novel! I only have one urban fantasy on my TBR which is Neil Gaiman’s Neverwhere.
You and Hermione rush to get a compartment and a breathless Ron catches up with you a few minutes after the train leaves. You fill them both in on the inconvenient house elf visit, which prompts Ron to pipe up that Dobby belongs to the Malfoys. Suspicion soon subsides when chocolate frogs arrive and now you have to decide how to spend the rest of the journey: playing wizards chess, or talking to Hermione about books whilst a bored Ron sleeps. I obviously went bookish! Turns out Hermione’s started a book club at the end of first year, and my next choice is whether to join or not. I decide to join, and get a second prompt for this week: a buddy read or book club pick.
Since it’s Hermione’s book club, I thought I’d pick one from Emma Watson’s Our Shared Shelf and opted for the The Beauty Myth by Naomi Wolf. This was a 2017 pick for Our Shared Shelf but it’s been on my bookshelves for much longer! Turns out Hermione’s book club is called ‘The Book Owlery’ so given the name of this blog, it’s only fitting that I went with that choice! She lends you the club’s summer read, which was a collection of stories about the mysterious Chamber of Secrets that supposedly exists at Hogwarts…
