May’s Monthly Round-Up

After the rush of reading as much as I could for April’s Magical Readathon, it was really nice to be a bit more leisurely with my reading, letting me really savour each book. I ended up reading some really great books, most of them ended up being four- or five-star reads. Let’s have a look at what I read!

  • Happy Fat by Sofie Hagen (Review) – 4 stars
  • Shrill: Notes from a Loud Woman by Lindy West (Review) – 4 stars
  • La Belle Sauvage by Philip Pullman (Review) – 5 stars
  • Lost and Wanted by Nell Freudenberger (Review) – 3 stars
  • All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr (Review) – 5 stars
  • The House of Impossible Beauties by Joseph Cassara (Review) – 2 stars

Shrill was my Unread Shelf Project read for this month. The prompt was ‘Bought because of an adaptation’. I’ve had Shrill on my list since long before the show came out, but the adaptation reignited my interest in reading the book, and as it’s the only book on my TBR with an adaptation I decided to use it for this prompt.

I’ve already finished my first book for June, so it seems like a promising reading month is ahead!

Here’s some other non-bookish things I’ve been enjoying this month.

On the small screen

  • In a month which saw some pretty terrible (understatement) anti-abortion legislation passed, Knock Down the House is a much-needed reminder that there are some amazing politicians out there that can make a difference, despite the odds stacked against them.
  • In Someone Great, Gina Rodriguez plays a music journalist who is dumped by her boyfriend days before she moves across the country, so she’s determined to have one last amazing night with her two best friends. This was so much fun, it made me laugh and cry. I highly recommend it if you’re looking for a fun Friday night movie fix.
  • Last but definitely not least, Game of Thrones finally ended last week. Boy, what a ride. I’ve loved and hated this show and I’m probably going to start it all over again. If you follow me on Twitter, you might have seen that I’ve spotted a few cast members around my local area!

Making (sound)waves

  • Stormzy’s new track is an absolute bop and is, coincidentally, titled Vossi Bop. Can’t get it out of my head.
  • I realised I’ve never mentioned one of my favourite podcasts, Why Won’t You Date Me? I love Nicole Byer, I think she’s absolutely hilarious. In her weekly podcast she interviews her guest about their relationships and then they look through her dating profiles and answer the all important question: “would you date me?!”
  • The weather seems to be perking up again and – dare I say it? – summer seems to be on its way, so it’s a perfect time to break out HONNE. Their albums are full of summer jams and make me feel so happy!
