I saw this over on books-and-floralteacups and seeing as I started this blog mid-year I thought it would be good to do a mid-year catch up to fill you all in on some of the books I read before starting The Owlery Reader!
1. Best book you’ve read so far in 2018.
The Word for Woman is Wilderness by Abi Andrews has probably been my favourite so far.
2. Best sequel you’ve read so far in 2018.
A Murder of Magpies by Mark Edwards. It’s actually the only sequel I’ve read this year, but was still good.
3. New release you haven’t read yet, but want to.
Social Creature by Tara Isabella Burton looks great and it’s been all over my Instagram feed recently!
4. Most anticipated release for the second half of the year.
Fruit of the Drunken Tree by Ingrid Rojas Contreras comes out at the end of the month and I’m really excited for that.
5. Biggest disappointment.
Written on the Body by Jeanette Winterson. I had to read it for class and I was really excited for it, and a lot of my classmates had told me how good it was, but I almost didn’t finish it because I disliked it so much.
6. Biggest surprise.
Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides. This was assigned reading for one of my classes and I was instantly put off by the length of it (500+ pages is a lot when you have three other books to read for that week) and I didn’t much fancy the story, but it’s actually become one of my favourites.
7. Favorite new author (debut or new to you).
Abi Andrews, who wrote The Word for Woman is Wilderness, which was her debut book. I really enjoyed her writing style so I’m looking forward to seeing what else she writes!
8. Newest fictional crush.
9. Newest favorite character.
I loved Erin from The Word for Woman is Wilderness.
10. Book that made you cry.
I’m not sure that any books this year have made me cry so far?
11. Book that made you happy.
Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Prachett. It’s been a while since I read Neil Gaiman and this was a really fun read.
12. Favorite book-to-film adaptation that you’ve seen this year.
Definitely Annihilation! I read the book (by Jeff Vandermeer) just before the film came out. I knew I’d love the film because it’s directed by Alex Garland, but it really exceeded my expectations, even though it differs a lot from the book.
13. Favorite review you’ve written.
Probably I’ll Give You the Sun, just because it was my first review!
14. Most beautiful book you’ve bought so far this year (or received).
The Slytherin House editions of The Chamber of Secrets! I won them in a competition from Bloomsbury and they’re beautiful.
15. What books do you need to read by the end of the year?
I need to finish the POPSUGAR Reading Challenge. I think I have 15 books left of the main set of prompts, and nine of the additional prompts left to do.
