Book Review: Selected Poems by e e cummings

Richard S. Kennedy, E. E. Cummings’ biographer, compiles a over 100 of the poet’s works. Covering a range of topics, each subject is introduced by Kennedy with brief biographical contextualisation and some of Cummings’ original artworks.

Some of the poems in this collection were set as assigned reading during my university years, but I had never read the full collection until now. Like all poetry collections, there are going to be some you love and some you don’t. This balance leaned more to the ‘don’t’ side for me, simply because of Cummings’ unusual employment of punctuation that makes his poetry so distinct. However, this collection does contain some of my favourite poems, and it’s a good but brief overview of the poet’s life.
