Six For Sunday is a weekly blog series created by Steph @ ALittleButALot. Prompts for the first three months of 2020 are now up, and today’s prompt is Characters I Would Name My Kids After. Some of my favourite names in general stem from book characters, and a character’s name can really make or break a story for me sometimes, so I do pay a lot of attention to them! Now I don’t know if I’d necessarily name my non-existent children after any of these lot, but I do love these names. These are favourites because of the name itself, not necessarily the character that possesses them (though it helps). I had a fun time making these little graphics and picking iconic images that go with each name too!
I love celestial names and Sirius is no exception. It certainly helps that he’s one of my favourite ever characters.
Another celestial name in the form of Lyra, and as proof of how much I love both the names Lyra and Sirius, as a child I named my pet goldfish after them!
As a general rule, I love names with ‘L’ sounds in them, especially boys names. Elio is no exception, but its unusualness is an additional perk.
Lolita just sounds beautiful. I think Nabokov summed this one up pretty well: “Lolita … the tip of the tongue taking a trip of three steps down the palate to tap, at three, on the teeth.”
Despite being the titular character, she doesn’t get a huge amount of on-page action, but the name Anna Karenina is just straight up fun to say.
I’m not actually that big of a fan of Hercule Poirot – I much prefer Miss Marple – but you can’t deny that his name is suave af.
What are your favourite character names?
