Stacking the Shelves: October

Hosted by Tynga’s Reviews and Reading RealityStacking the Shelves is a regular feature where I share everything I’ve added to my TBR list in the past month.

I added far fewer books to my TBR in October than I have in previous months, but I think these are all going to be great reads. Quality over quantity! Still, they’re all low priority reads for me whilst I continue working on the books I’ve already got.

The Grace Year by Kim Liggett

What: A feminist YA dystopia that sees young girls turned out into the violent woodland for their sixteenth year to become ‘purified’.
Where: I have seen this everywhere and everyone has raved about it, but it was Alana @ The Bookish Chick that eventually prompted me to add it to my list.
Why: I’ve heard great things and it seems like a pretty fast-paced and tension-packed read.
Status: Need to buy.
Priority: Low.
Prediction: 3 stars.

English Animals by Laura Kaye

What: Mirka arrives in England from Slovakia and gets a job in a run-down rural country house, where she takes up taxidermy and embarks on a doomed romance.
Where: Another fantastic review from Merry @ Letters from the Lighthouse put me on to this one.
Why: Merry’s ‘five words or less’ for this book were “taxidermy, lesbians & social critique”… what’s not to love?!
Status: Need to buy.
Priority: Low.
Prediction: 3 stars.

In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado

What: Machado’s memoir of her experience of an abusive queer relationship, told through narrative tropes and horror themes.
Where: Kristin @ Kristen Kraves Books shared this as one of her own recent TBR additions.
Why: I really liked Machado’s writing in Her Body and Other Parties but the short story format didn’t work for me. I think I’ll fare much better with her long-form work.
Status: Need to buy.
Priority: Low.
Prediction: 4 stars.

Do you have any of these on your TBR?
Or have you read any already?
