Tell Me Something Tuesday is a weekly book-themed discussion surrounding a question posed by Rainy Day Ramblings. This week’s question is:
What are things that make you steer clear of a book?
I’m going with things that would make me not want to read a book in the first place, rather than things that put me off a book whilst I’m reading it.
There’s only one genre which I would never read, and that’s
Romance . Regardless of how much everyone else may be raving about it, I don’t read Romance books. It doesn’t appeal to me at all, and even if a book from another genre has romance as it’s central story arc, I’ll still avoid it. Not for me!
The other thing that puts me off a book is if it’s part of a series, or if it’s particularly long. I hate to DNF a book so if I start one that’s particularly lengthy and I end up disliking it, I often feel like I have to finish it which is time I could be spending reading something else. However, I’m trying to change my behaviour towards this by DNF-ing books if I’m not enjoying them and tackling the biggest books on my TBR. Already I’m starting to feel less put-off by books with a big page count.
That’s about it though! I’m working on being less intimidated by series/big books, but I can’t see myself ever becoming a fan of Mills & Boon. I will say, however, that I’m very guilty of judging a book by its cover. After all, that is the purpose of the cover!
