The Guilty Reader Tag

I love a good book tag! I saw this on Danni’s blog @ ForBooksSake, but the tag originates on Youtube. The original video, by Chami, doesn’t exist anymore but there’s plenty of people who have done the tag in video form! Consider yourself tagged if you think it looks fun.

Now, the questions!

Have you ever re-gifted a book that you’ve been given?
I’m not sure I’ve ever re-gifted a book… I’ve definitely donated books that were gifts if someone’s got my taste completely off, and I’ve certainly had a cheeky read of a book before I’ve gifted it, but I don’t think I’ve re-gifted a book before.

Have you ever said you’ve read a book when you haven’t?
Definitely once or twice when I didn’t quite finish a required reading text for class, but that’s it.

Have you ever borrowed a book and not returned it?
Yes, but totally by accident. A colleague lent me an entire series and I never got around to reading it, and then they left work and we lost touch. I found them in my loft years later (the books, not my colleague) and felt so guilty, but I knew I’d never read them so I donated them.

Have you ever read a series out of order?
I can’t recall which series it was but I’m quite sure I’ve accidentally picked up the second in a series as a last minute holiday read in an airport bookstore, not realising it was part of a series and then accidentally read them out of order.

Have you ever spoiled a book for someone?
I can’t recall a specific occasion but I’m really bad for accidentally spoiling things for people! People will say ‘Oh yeah, I watch that show!’ and I’ll bring up something recent and they’ll go ‘… I’ve only seen the first season…’ HOW AM I TO KNOW?! I would never do it on purpose because I hate spoilers. I’ve had this happen a few times so I’m super wary of doing it now!

Have you ever dogeared a book?
Once or twice. If it’s a secondhand copy that’s already a little worn I don’t mind dog-earing them if I don’t have a bookmark handy. I definitely wouldn’t do it to a new-looking book though.

Have you ever told someone you don’t own a book when you do?
No, if someone wanted to borrow a book and I didn’t trust them with it I’d just conveniently forget to bring it every time I saw them, or tell them I’ve lent it to someone else and haven’t had it back yet.

Have you ever told someone you haven’t read a book when you have?
I don’t think so. I’m not embarrassed by anything I’ve read and I can’t think of any other reason why I’d lie about that?

Have you ever skipped a chapter or a section of a book?
I never entirely skip. I know people who skip entire chapters if it’s in a less-liked character’s POV which is WILD to me, how can you just skip a chunk of the book like that?! But I will skim occasionally. I think I skim-read the entire second half of The Portrait of the Artist as Young Man because it was so boring but I needed to read it for class. It still took me hours, and I was up past midnight skim-reading it, and then class was cancelled anyway. Fuming!

Have you ever bad mouthed a book you actually liked?
I can acknowledge when a book I like has problematic aspects but I can’t think of any situation when I’d feel the need to bad-mouth a book I liked?

Do you have any bookish guilty confessions?!
