Theatre Review: War Horse at The Troubadour

I’m reviewing something a little different today. This Thursday was my birthday (yay me!) and I had a lovely surprise present from my brother’s girlfriend in the form of tickets to see War Horse at The Troubadour theatre in London.

I had never seen War Horse before, and was surprised to find that after informing my friends of my mystery surprise, they had all seen it already so I feel very late to the party!

While the story is fantastic, both moving and funny, it’s the puppetry that really steals the show here. From the lead star, Joey the horse, down to the swallows that open the show, every puppet was masterfully handled with incredibly realistic movements and sounds. When full-grown Joey first takes the stage, the sheer size of him takes you aback, and the ease with which the puppeteers manoeuvred the structure is amazing.

War Horse‘s run at The Troubadour is unfortunately ending on November 23rd. However, if you manage to catch a show elsewhere – it’s heading to France, Australia, and Singapore in the New Year! – I would highly recommend it.

Rating: 5 / 5 stars
