Top 5 Wednesday: Books I Wish I Read in 2019

Top 5 Wednesday is a weekly blog series hosted on Goodreads by Sam @ ThoughtsOnTomes. The series is currently on hiatus so no new prompts are being produced, but it’s a perfect opportunity to work through some old prompts I missed, or come up with some ones of my own!

This week I’m taking a look at the books I really wish I had read last year, but for some reason or another didn’t get around to.

The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon

I can’t wait to read this, but when I finally found time to read it last year, it was in the autumn and I was a little behind on my reading goal and didn’t want to get bogged down with a book so big. I tend to read the bigger books on my TBR at the beginning of the year so I should read this soon!

The Binding by Bridget Collins

I was so excited to read this when it came out last January, but mediocre reviews pushed it down my list of priorities. I definitely want to tick it off soon though!

The Secret Commonwealth by Philip Pullman

I bought this on its day of release but still haven’t read it. I think I’m actually glad I didn’t though, because after finishing the His Dark Materials TV show, I’m itching to re-read the series, which will set me up perfectly to read this straight after!

Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman

There was so much hype around this when it came out but I still haven’t read it. I actually don’t think I’m going to love it as much as everyone else seems to, which is why I kind of want to read it sooner rather than later so that I get it out of the way!

The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers

I’ve heard nothing but great things about this series so I can’t wait to start it! I just haven’t gotten around to cracking open the first book yet.

Did you read any of these last year?
Any books you wished you’d gotten around to?

  1. The Priory of the Orange Tree is, indeed, massive, but it also reads SO quickly! A long weekend should do it, honestly. Highly recommend getting to it soon – it’s delightful.

  2. I also wanted to get to The Priory of the Orange Tree last year, but didn’t. I also wanted to read The Binding (I don’t own that one, though), but the earlier reviews led me to wait until more people with similar tastes to my own had read and reviewed it. I think I might pick it up this year, though. I read The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet around this time last year and loved it <3 Good luck with all of these, and I hope you enjoy them!

    1. Yeah I think that’s why I’ve been less eager to get to The Binding than I was when it first came out. The paperback has just come out I think because there’s posters for it everywhere on the underground so my interest has been renewed a little! Very keen to read Small Angry Planet though, I haven’t heard a single bad word about this one! Thanks ☺️
